The primary purpose of your job position is to assist in the planning, organizing, developing, anddirecting of the overall operation of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with currentapplicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations, within individual’s scopeof practice, as applicable, and as may be directed by the Director of Nursing or administrator, toassure that quality patient care is maintained.


Listed below is an outline of the duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform.As ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING, you are delegated the authority, responsibility, andaccountability to carry out your assigned duties.

  • Assist in the planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the nursing service department, its programs and activities
  • Meet with administration, medical, and nursing staff, as well as other related departments in planning departmental services, programs, and activities
  • Develop and maintain a working rapport with inter-departmentalal personnel, as well as other related departments within the facility to assure that the department services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the patients
  • Assure that department personnel, patients, visitors, etc. follow established policies and procedures
  • Interpret departmental policies and procedures to personnel, patients, visitors, family members, etc. as necessary
  • Assist in the development of and participate in programs designed for inservice education, on-the-job training, and orientation classes for newly assigned department personnel. (Includes maintaining appropriate record keeping requirements of when classes were conducted, subject matter, attendance, etc)
  • Maintain a working relationship with the medical profession and other health-related facilities and organizations
  • Meet with department personnel on a regularly scheduled basis and solicit advice from inter- departmental supervisors concerning the operation of the department, assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services
  • Participate in discharge planning, development, and implementations of patient care plans, patient assessments, etc.
  • Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc. and submitting them to the department director as necessary
  • Provide information to patient/family as to Medicare/Medicaid or other financial assistance programs available to the patient, or refer to appropriate social service department or agency
  • Assist in determining departmental staffing, employee performance evaluations, and make recommendations to the department director concerning wage and salary adjustments, hiring, terminations, transfers, etc.
  • Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary
  • Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of patient care information to assure patient rights are protected
  • Assure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc. are maintained at adequate levels
  • Inspect the nursing service areas & practices for compliance with current applicable regulations
  • Serve on various committees of the facility, as required or as appointed by the department director or Administrator
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing recommendations from the facility’s committees, e.g. Pharmacy, Infection Control, etc.
  • Participate in patient selection in relation to nursing needs and the capability of the department to supply the needed care as assigned
  • Work with the facility’s consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as required
  • Review complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the department director
  • Represent the facility at and participate in meetings as required
  • Represent the facility in dealings with outside agencies, including government agencies/ personnel as authorized
  • Delegate authority, responsibility, and accountability to other responsible department personnel
  • Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc. to keep abreast of current changes in the health care field, as well as to maintain a professional status
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the department director concerning the operation of the nursing service department
  • Assure that department is maintained in a clean and safe manner for patient comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/services
  • Maintain an adequate liaison with families and patients
  • Execute patient care policies in the absence of the medical director, the attending physician, and the director of nurses, or as may be otherwise authorized
  • Assure that the total nursing needs of patients are met by assuring that sufficient number of professional and nonprofessional nursing personnel are on duty
  • Assist in scheduling department working hours, personnel, work assignments, etc. to maintain quality patient care
  • Assist in establishing the administration, procedures, and control of medication, etc. as recommended by the pharmacist and pharmacy committee
  • Assume the authority, responsibility, and accountability of directing the nursing service department in the absence of the DON
  • Assure that all nurses’ notes are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and of the patient’s response to the care by having system in place to monitor
  • Review the nursing requirements of each patient admitted to the facility, as may be required, and assist the attending physician in planning for the patient’s care
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining procedures for assuring that nursing personnel, to include private duty nurses, have a valid and current license as required by this state
  • Make rounds with attending physician/medical director, etc. as necessary
  • Encourage attending physician(s) to record and sign progress notes, as well as review treatment plans, etc.
  • Make daily rounds to assure department personnel are performing required duties, and to assure that appropriate patient care is being rendered
  • Other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate or as may be directed by the department director or Administrator

  • Involved with patients, family members, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions/circumstances
  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, etc.
  • Communicates with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors
  • Willingness to work beyond normal working hours when necessary
  • Involved in community/civic health matters/projects as assigned
  • Attend and participate in continuing educational programs
  • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, substances, odors, etc. throughout the workday
