The primary purpose of your job position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct the overalloperation of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations within the individual’s scope of practice, asapplicable, and as may be directed by the Administrator, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.


Listed below is an outline of the duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. As the DIRECTOR OF NURSING, you are delegated the authority, responsibility, & accountabilityto carry out your assigned duties.

Even though your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete as possible. HOWEVER, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities.

  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing service department, its programs, and its activities
  • Meet with administration, medical, and nursing staff, as well as other related departments in planning department inservices, programs, and activities
  • Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that the department services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residents
  • Develop and maintain nursing objectives and standards
  • Review department policies and procedures so you can interpret to personnel, residents, visitors, family members, etc. as necessary
  • Assist in the development of the department budget
  • Be aware of and help develop programs designed for inservice education, on-the-job training, and orientation classes. Monitor records for attendance, etc
  • Maintain an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other health-related facilities and organizations
  • Meet with department personnel on a regularly scheduled basis, and solicit advice from inter- department supervisors concerning the operation of the department, assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services
  • Participate in discharge planning, development, and implementation of resident care plans, resident assessments, etc
  • Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc. and submitting to the Administrator as required
  • Involve the resident/family in planning objectives and goals for the resident
  • Provide information to resident/families as to Medicare/Medicaid or other financial assistance programs available to the resident, or refer to appropriate social service department or agency
  • Assist in determining departmental staffing, evaluate employee performance, and make recommendations to the Administrator concerning wage and salary adjustments. Informs and consults Administrator of hiring, terminations, transfers, etc. of departmental staff as necessary
  • Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary
  • Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY pertinent resident care information to assure resident rights are protected
  • Coordinate Nursing Service with other departments
  • Assure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc. are maintained at adequate levels by setting up systems and monitoring
  • Inspect the nursing service areas & practices for compliance with current applicable regulations
  • Develop a nursing service organization structure (who reports to whom)
  • Serve on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations and as appointed by the Administrator
  • Evaluate and implement recommendations from the facility’s committees, e.g. Pharmacy, Infection Control, etc
  • Participate in resident selection in relation to nursing needs & the capability of the department to supply the needed care
  • Work with the facility’s consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as required
  • Review complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the Administrator
  • Keep abreast of economic conditions/situation and recommend adjustments to assure the continued ability to provide quality resident care
  • Represent the facility at and participate in meetings
  • Represent the facility in dealing with outside agencies, including governmental agencies and third party payees, or provide an authorized representative when unable to attend such meetings
  • Delegate authority, responsibility, & accountability to other responsible department personnel
  • Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc. to keep abreast of current changes in the health care field, as well as to maintain a professional status
  • Recommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator concerning the operation of the nursing service department
  • Assure that the department is maintained in a clean and safe manner for resident comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/services
  • Maintain an adequate liaison with families and residents
  • Execute resident care policies in the absence of the medical director and/or the attending physician
  • Assure that the total nursing needs of residents are met by assuring that sufficient number of professional and nonprofessional nursing personnel are on duty at all times
  • Assist in scheduling department working hours, personnel, work assignments, etc. to maintain quality resident care
  • Assist in establishing the administration, procedures, and control of medication, etc. as recommended by the pharmacist and pharmacy committee
  • Assume the authority, responsibility, and accountability of directing the nursing service department
  • Assure that all nurses’ notes are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and of the resident’s response to the care by having systems in place to monitor
  • Review the nursing requirements of each resident admitted to the facility, as may be required, and assist the attending physician in planning for the resident’s care
  • Establish a procedure for assuring that nursing personnel, to include private duty nurses, have a valid and current license as required by this state
  • Make rounds with attending physician/medical director, etc. as necessary
  • Make daily rounds to assure that department personnel are performing required duties and to assure that appropriate resident care is being rendered
  • Other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate, or as may be directed by the Administrator


  • Works in well-lighted/ventilated office areas, as well as throughout the nursing service areas
  • Sitting, standing, bending, lifting, and moving intermittently during working hours
  • Involved with residents, family members, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions/circumstances
  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc
  • Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors
  • Willingness to work beyond normal working hours when necessary
  • Involved in community/civic health matters/projects
  • Attend and participate in continuing educational programs
  • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, odors, etc. throughout the work day
